FRIENDS#UNHOSTED is developed by the staff at
Agical, a Swedish IT consultancy firm with a passion for building the software
community and for open source. F#Un is open source and released with some
rights reserved under the
AGPLv3license. The source is available at our
GitHub repositoryFeel free to fork it and help us out.
F#Un came out of the desire to have a social network where the network
is owned by the users, not by some Mega Corp. The #unhosted technology
makes this possible. At the moment, all data is public, meaning anyone
can read anything you write. We intend to add privacy enhancing features
using common cryptographic solutions.
Give me the technical details!
Regarding how #unhosted works, please read the material on
unhosted.org. Simply put, it is a secure, standardized, API for storing key-value
data pairs in different categories.
F#Un uses (as of now in early beta) the
publiccategory storage of your unhosted account. This means that
anyone can see your updates and your list of friends, in a twitterish style.
The plan for the future is to share keys to lock the stuff you only want
your friends to see, so stay tuned for that.
This app has so far been developed on spare time. Hopefully, with a little
help from our friends (that means You), we can start developing during
normal business hours, part or full time. Please, Flattr the application,
send some BitCoins our way, or donate using PayPal.

We are developing FRIENDS#UNHOSTED on our spare time, hence we have a
very limited amount of time available for developing the site, or help
out with any support issues. But there is a solution...

There will never be a gigantic social network database hosted on our servers
that make investors drool money over us. Well, maybe they will drool money
all over us, but not because of a social network database. Therefore, we
need direct sponsorship from anyone that think this is a good idea. You
can also check out the

By submitting patches for the site you might even be able to help yourself!
That is so open source!!
Enter your friends email address and click invite. Your preset email client will start with a prefilled message.
Remember that you can add several friends in a single mail.
How do I add friends?
To add a friend to your network, you need to get your friends storage
address. That storage address looks like an email address:
username@storageserver.com
You add that address to your F#Un friends, and then you can see the updates
of your friend.
How do I find my friends?
At the moment, there is no central server where you can find your friends,
that would kind of defeat the purpose of the unhosted thing. Since there
is no central server, you need to get in contact with your friends using
email or some existing social media. Neat, huh?!
A note on security
There is no central server validating the friends you add, or their data.
When you add a friend, you will download the data from their store to your computer.
For better or for worse, you have the responsibility.

What is FRIENDS#UNHOSTED?
FRIENDS#UNHOSTED is an alternative social network for those of us who
want to own our social network data. With F#Un, your data is not stored
at a central server, but at a place of your choosing using an
#unhosted
remoteStorage. You can even host the data server on your home network, given that the
server is reachable from the internet.
Signing up is a little bit different than with other social sites. Since
you own your data, you need to decide where to put it, we don't do that
for you. We don't own you, you do!
How do I signup?
The easiest is to get an account on one of the following storage providers:
You will get a username that looks like an email address:
username@storageserver.com
Enter that username in the loginbox and press Login. You will get redirected
to that storage provider site to grand FRIENDS#UNHOSTED access your storage.
After granting access, you will be redirected back to FRIENDS#UNHOSTED,
now in a logged in state. You can read more about #unhosted storage providers
here - you can even host your own:
The big social network sites, like Facebook, Twitter, Google and many
more, give you free storage for your stuff. But, there is no such thing
as a "free lunch" (or storage). They monitor and explore your social network
and your personal life to launch marketing campaigns and direct ads, and
sometimes they even claim ownership of the stuff you add, like status updates,
pictures and documents. If that is fine with you, then excellent, give
your stuff to, and share your private life with, The Big Ones!
If, on the other hand, you have that nagging little doubt that there is
something fishy going on, FRIENDS#UNHOSTED is for you!
